Leather is beautiful, soft, durable and if properly cared for can last a very long time. The life span of a well maintained leather sofa* under normal conditions is at least 25- 30 years. A leather coat or jacket should last for several years.

Proper leather care requires regular cleaning and conditioning, to keep leather upholstery and leather articles supple and prevent damage. Otherwise, dirt, grit and grime can discolor surface areas and eventually get down into the sub surface fibers causing cracking, tears and rips.

Using the wrong type of cleaning products can damage your upholstery. Some leather cleaners while suitable for products like saddles and boots, (which are made with very thick leather) harden the surface of upholstery leather, which then can’t flex and breathe as it should.

Many inexpensive cleaners use harsh chemicals that remove some of the surface dye and strip the natural oils causing fading and cracking. This damage is not always immediately visible, but becomes apparent over time.

You need a leather cleaner, that penetrates deep to remove the grit and grime that can cause damage, yet is gentle, contains no harmful chemicals and is pH balanced for upholstery and fine products like coats, and purses.

Leather and Vinyl MD’s leather care products work thoroughly but gently and are matched to the different types of leather finishes. They are also pH balanced and specially formulated for leather upholstery. They contain no harsh chemicals and are non toxic.

Leather upholstery in automobiles generaly has a thicker coating of pigment and top coat, because it is often subjected to heavier use and amd more soiling and staining. For cars that need an extra strong cleaner, that still will not damage the leather, the best choice UltraClean . This cleaner is also the best product for the vinyl which is found in auto interiors, even those with leather seats.

During processing the outerskin, (the hair/fur/wool side) is removed and the portion of the middleskin (or corium) that now becomes exposed is called the GRAIN side. The underskin is also removed and the part of the corium now exposed is the SUEDE side.

Leather hides are colored in one of three ways.

1. The very best hides (the top 10%) are immersed in a semi-transparent dye that penetrates the leather from one side to the other. These Non Pigmented leathers are called Pure Aniline or Nubuck depending on the finish (Nubuck has a velvety feel) and are sometimes referred to as ‘raw’ leathers because they do not have a protective coating of pigment. Only the very best hides are treated this way as imperfections are not hidden by this process. These leathers are soft, strong and beautiful but because they do not have a protective pigment they stain easily and if these stains are not treated immediately they become very difficult if not impossible to remove. Nubuck is often used on shoes and purses as well as upholstered furniture. Pure aniline will be found on some high end furniture.

2. Hides that are high quality but not in the top 10% are both immersed in a semi-transparent dye and top-coated with pigment. These Pigmented are called Semi-Aniline or Protected Aniline depending on the amount of pigment used. (Semi-aniline will have slightly less pigment than protected aniline). These leathers can be cleaned, and stains are relatively easy to remove (professionally). These leathers are used for furniture, and also leather clothing (coats, jackets, skirts etc.) They can be cleaned with our professional Leather Cleaner.

3. Less expensive hides are heavily top-coated with an opaque pigment on the grain side. These Pigmented hides are called Protected Leathers. This process conceals the imperfections which are more abundant on this leather. This type of leather is most often used for auto upholstery, leather jackets and purses. It is easy to clean.

Proper leather care requires regular cleaning and conditioning, to keep leather upholstery supple and prevent damage. Otherwise, dirt, grit and grime can discolor surface areas and eventually get down into the sub surface fibers causing cracking, tears and rips.

Using the wrong type of cleaning products can also damage your upholstery. Some cleaners while suitable for products like saddles and boots, harden the surface of upholstery leather, which then can’t flex and breathe as it should. These cleaners remove some of the surface dye and strip the natural oils causing fading and cracking. You need a leather cleaner, that penetrates deep to remove the grit and grime that can cause damage, yet is gentle and pH balanced for upholstery leather.

1. Vacuum leather upholstery with the upholstery tool at least once a week.

2. Either place furniture away from direct sunlight or use uvSunguard to prevent sun fading.

3. Damp or wet jeans and newspapers and can cause ‘dye transfer’ to occur. That is the dye from these articles will penetrate the leather and cause stains that are difficult to remove.

4. Blot all spills quickly. Don’t rub them in.

5. Do not use harsh cleaners, chemicals (bleach, acetone) to remove stains. Not only will they damage the leather and remove the dye, some chemicals will also leave a barrier on the leather that will make repair and re-dyeing difficult or impossible.

6. Test cleaners and conditioners on an inconspicuous spot before use.

7. Watch out for pets. Cat scratches can cause a lot of damage and some dogs like to tear out pieces of the leather
